ABOUT GOLDEN TEA CENTRE IN MAHMUDABAD

Our Story

The history of tea leaves in Lucknow is intertwined with the broader history of tea cultivation in India. While Lucknow itself was not a major tea-growing region, tea consumption became an integral part of its culture, especially during the Nawabi era.

Introduction of Golden Tea Centre in Lucknow

  • Tea was introduced to India by the British in the early 19th century. They started large-scale cultivation in Assam and Darjeeling to compete with the Chinese tea trade.
  • The East India Company promoted tea consumption among Indians, and it gradually became popular across regions, including Lucknow.

Tea Culture in Lucknow

  • Nawabi Influence (18th-19th Century): Under the Nawabs of Awadh, Lucknow developed a rich culinary and cultural heritage. While coffee and sherbets were more traditional, tea gained popularity among the elite in the 19th century.
  • British Era (19th-20th Century): As British influence grew in Lucknow, tea-drinking became common, especially in social gatherings and literary circles.
  • Post-Independence: After 1947, tea became a daily staple across all social classes. Chai (milk tea) stalls, known as chai ki dukaan, became an essential part of the city's street culture.

Present-Day Tea Culture

  • Lucknow’s Famous Teas: The city is known for its kulhad chai (tea served in clay cups), tandoori chai, and spiced masala chai.
  • Popular Tea Spots: Places like Sharma Ji Ki Chai and Raheem’s Chai are famous for their unique brewing styles.
  • Modern Variations: Today, cafes and tea lounges in Lucknow offer a mix of traditional and contemporary tea varieties.

LOOSE TEA

Chai tea is a blend of black tea leaves and aromatic spices like cardamom, ginger, star anise and cloves. To brew chai tea, you can use loose-leaf black tea, ideally Assam or Ceylon tea, but English Breakfast or other black tea blends work wonderfully too. Loose-leaf tea is generally of a higher quality than bags, with large pieces and less dust, which can lead to bitter or tannic tea. To make chai loose tea, combine Assam tea, ginger, and ground spices in a bowl or jar, and stir to combine
